ARCDOX to Chair RIAI Practice Committee on BIM

The RIAI (Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland) has selected Ralph Montague, partner of ARCDOX , to chair a special practice committee on BIM (Building Information Modelling).

THe RIAI have recognized that BIM (Building Information Modelling) is having a dramatic impact on the construction industry and the practice of architecture worldwide. For the architect it is promoting more efficient production of design & construction documentation, better analysis and collaboration with the project team. For construction it is contributing to a vastly improved procurement process, and significant reduction in waste, risk and project cost. The RIAI have determined, that raising the general understanding and uptake of BIM amongst the profession in Ireland is of such great importance, that they have established a dedicated practice committee to the investigate the benefits of BIM and explore ideas for the general advancement of BIM within our industry. The group will be chaired by Ralph Montague, partner of ARCDOX.

Established in February 2011, the RIAI Practice Committee for BIM comprises 20 architects or architectural technologists, from a good mix of small, medium and large practices, willing to contribute to research, information sharing and open discussion, regarding issues related to "BIM in Practice". A number of key issues have already been identified to be considered and addressed, under the following main headings :

  • Communications
  • Contracts & Agreements
  • Good Practice
  • Technical Standards & Protocols
  • Hardware & Software
  • Education & Training
The group is collating valuable research to inform members of the RIAI, and welcomes any input, comments, ideas, or queries, to promote some "joined-up" thinking on the subject within the profession. The initial outcome will be a series on informative papers, articles, and events, aimed at supporting the general adoption and implementation of BIM in the Irish architectural and construction industry. Please do not hesitate to contact Ralph Montague if you want to contribute to the work of the group.

ARCDOX and CITA host IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) Round Table Series in Ireland

ARCDOX and CITA have initiated a 12-month series of webinar based round table discussions on the subject of IPD (Integrated Project Delivery). Chaired by James Salmon, experienced construction lawyer and  president of US-based Collaborative Construction Resources (CCR), this series will offer  valuable insight into the adoption of IPD, BIM and Lean Construction,  practices which are going to have a profound effect on our future methods of procurement. This series will allow like-minded construction industry partners from all regions in Ireland to engage in meaningful discussion about BIM & IPD.

ARCDOX to Coordinate Special Interest BIM Group for CITA

Dr.Alan Hore, Executive Director of CITA (Construction IT Allaince), has selected Ralph Montague, partner of ARCDOX , to help set up and coordinate  a special interest working group on BIM (Building Information Modelling) within the CITA network.

The CITA BIM Group will function within the remit of the CITA Enterprise Innovation Network (EIN) initiative (see http://cita.ie/EIN/ for more details), which aims to promote information technology, research and innovation in Small/Medium Enterprises in the construction industry. The objective of the CITA EIN project is to promote, through detailed research and analysis of requirements, development or procurement of solutions, and promotion of their implementation, the use of electronic business in small and medium sized companies in the European construction sector.

This group comprises members of the CITA EIN network, with a particular interest in BIM (Building Information Modelling), with the express purpose to investigate the benefits of BIM and ideas for the general advancement of BIM for the Irish Construction Industry, and report finding back to the CITA network and wider construction industry. The aim is to promote some joined up thinking amongst industry partners, on the adoption and implementation of BIM, and the hope is that the findings can also form part of a lobbying campaign to government and other client bodies, to help promote the general use of BIM in this country. There is an aspirational goal that the efforts of this group could eventually lead to the formation of a BIM Centre of Excellence for Ireland, to advise the industry.

The success of this project will depend on the collaborative input from the most diverse range of people from the construction industry as possible, from consultants to contractors, clients and end-users, IT consultants, software vendors, manufacturers and related service providers. Anyone with a particular interest in BIM, who would like to join this group, or even contribute in some way to the meaningful discussion about BIM for Ireland, should contact Ralph Montague (CITA BIM Group Coordinator). You can follow the CITA BIM Group on LinkedIn.
